Ceilings as Fifth Walls

At JAC, we are huge fans of wallpaper and its ability to transform a space more powerfully than paint. It really can set a mood, and add loads of visual interest and even texture. And if you consider the ceiling the fifth wall, then it begins to make sense that you may want to add some kind of fun detail to almost any space but on the ceiling.

There are a few caveats though. Wallpaper on the ceiling looks best architecturally when the ceiling is nice and clean with not too many perforations like recessed lights, skylights or vents, etc. Also if the ceiling in question is squared off with few curves, that’s best. You want to be able to show off the pattern but not tip over into the “optically busy” category. It is a fine line, but stick to right angles in your ceilings and you should be fine.

And if you really think about it, ceilings are often a neglected part of any space and particularly in a home. They normally live out their lives covered with white paint and that’s it. Don’t get me wrong, we love Benjamin Moore’s Simply White and it is probably the most perfect white wall paint to pair with a ceiling wallpaper!

With wallpaper on the ceiling, you can play with your favorite color, texture, pattern, and your space will become interesting and bespoke. With setting a wallpaper on the ceiling, you will also cover all its shortcomings. The embossed wallpaper, can give to every room a rustic look, and even does not have to be used in the whole room. If you want to change the look of your boring ceiling, and at the same time to change the look of the whole room, you should try with this inexpensive option. See below some creative examples that can serve you as inspiration!

Architecturally speaking, we think it works best to have nice clean ceiling geometries: (square, rectangle, etc.). and not too many perforations (recessed lights, skylights, vents, etc.) But beyond that, paper your ceiling with wild abandon and let your personality shine through!
